WHIZ KIDS | TUTORS NEEDED
Whiz Kids is a faith-based, one-on-one volunteer tutoring and mentoring program that focuses on second through fifth-grade students in areas with the highest drop-out rates and lowest socio-economic levels in Oklahoma City. Cherokee Hills Baptist Church partners with Tulakes Elementary School to provide one on one tutoring, a group Bible time, and a meal at the church each Wednesday during the school year from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
Whiz Kids is both proactive and preventative in nature, targeting students who are reading below grade level and who could benefit most from a mentor relationship with a caring adult. Mentorship is widely accepted as the most effective intervention for intergenerational poverty and low-academic achievement, and our Whiz Kids are no exception. After one year of tutoring, Whiz Kids quickly make up any achievement gap created by their circumstances and score an average of 32 points higher than their counterparts on state-administered reading tests.
One of our current tutors needs to step down from serving and we need a new tutor for our sweet Whiz Kid. We also have a waiting list of students that could benefit from Whiz Kids. Additional tutors would help us minister to those students. Contact Debbie Hanni at debbiehanni@gmail.com or 405-570-4879 if you are interested or would like further information.
Please join us in praying that the Lord will provide additional tutors for Whiz Kids.
Family Mission Trip | March 21st-23rd
This is a great trip for families of all ages to engage in missional living right within our own state.
We will be partnering with the Mobile Missions Network team in Tulsa to put on a party in the park and backyard bible club inside of a mobile home park where they do regular outreach events. We will receive training, support, and then have an opportunity to talk about what we saw God do after the event ends. We will worship with them on Sunday morning and then head home after.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who has never been on a mission trip before, or who has never gone on a mission trip as a family. There is something that everyone can do and the schedule will be flexible enough to accommodate any stage of life.
Cost: $70/person if you are staying with us at Mobile Missions Network headquarters (sleeping on air mattresses on the floor of a church) or $50/person if you want to arrange to stay at a hotel or somewhere close.
Our 2nd and final info meeting will be on February 16th after church in the Fellowship Hall. Anyone who is planning on coming with us needs to attend this meeting. Lunch will be provided.
If you have any questions, contact Caleb Glennie or Brandon Holloway.
